Rabbits
|
Rabbits are friendly affectionate animals, but as with all pets they need lots of love, care and attention everyday. Without it your rabbit could become lonely, unfriendly or even aggressive. Rabbits do make good family pets but they aren't used to being on their own and so will need lots of love and attention. They live for around 7 - 10 years so they are a big commitment. It takes more to care for a rabbit than other small animals such as hamsters or guinea pigs so make sure you can provide the proper care before you buy. |
Rabbit Care
|
The Hutch Rabbits need space so you should buy the biggest hutch you can afford. The hutch should have a sheltered area for night time and a light area for day time. Hutches should be weatherproofed if kept outside and placed in a sheltered position away from draught, cold and damp. The hutch should be raised off the floor and should be secured from predetors such as foxes. |
|
A Run Because rabbits love exercise it is important that you have a run. A run should be sturdy and secure. It is important that there is a shady area for your rabbit to shelter under on hot days. The base of the run should be secure as rabbits like to dig and may dig under the run. |
| Bedding
Put lots of bedding in the sleeping compartment of your rabbits hutch. They will curl up snugly in it. Your rabbit will need lots of clean bedding which you should change once a week or as soon as it becomes dirty. |
Feeding
|
Pellet food Pellet food has the same vitamins and minerals as a mix. Pellet food stops your rabbit picking out the bits of food they like and leaving the bits they don't (selective feeding). Although pellet food doesn't really give much variety to the diet it stops rabbits losing vitamins from selective feeding. |
|
Mix A mix is a good main food for your rabbit. It provides them with all the vitamins and minerals they need. They might pick out certain bits they like more than others so it's important to make sure they don't miss out on any vitamins. |
| Hay
Hay is an essential part of your rabbits diet not only does it give them something to chew when they get bored but it also aids thier digestion. |
| Treats
There are lots of treats avaliable at the pet shop. Some treats help to keep your rabbits teeth short by wearing them down. |
Handling
|
It's important to handle your rabbit as much as possible because the more they are handled the tamer they will get. To pick up your rabbit place one hand under their chest and forelegs and your other hand under his bottom and scoop him up. Hold him firmly but gently. Never pick them up by their ears! |
